A CheckUp on Nugget Liam

You want to know what's craaaaazy? This kid. How big he is. He's practically a toddler. Actually I think he really is a toddler, but I'm clinging to whatever remaining baby-ness that lingers. I think that's subconsciously part of the reason I still breastfeed. That, and the health benefits and yada yada yada ;). Also, did I mention he still sleeps next to me? As if we lived in a one-room hut and there were physically no other options? Yep. This is true. And, I'm not sure if you noticed, but my better half happens to be a pretty tall dude. So between my little dude and my better-half dude I spend most of my sleep in fetal position in the bottom corner of our king-size bed. So, that's fun.

^ This is the cleanest this kid's feet have looked since he started walking sprinting at 12 months. I kid you not, he can run a 7-minute-mile (Actually I am kidding. That would be impossible. I'm just being dramatic to illustrate a point, so clam down). The second a door (or the gate blocking Jada's dog food) is open he B-lines straight for the road (or to Jada's food and promptly stuffs 8 pieces of dog food in his mouth and sits in her water bowl). YOLO, I guess.

^ This is a Clint pose. Like he is a casual model lounging. You can almost see that Clint-smirk like, "Check out how simultaneously funny and cool I am".

^ And don't let this angelic, tucked-in-bottom-lip, big-toe-grabbing face deceive you. There's a plan formulating behind those big brown heavenly eyes. Man don't you just want to eat those kankles up!?

^ This one I like to call "I think it's time to go now...he's ripping the tassels off my pillow...".

^ And now he's mad that I took the pillow away.

My sexy Valentine's Day gift

Check out my Valentine's Day gift from Clint.
Where to begin?!?

Shall we start with the box...Yes let's start with this spicy-hot gift box. Nothing says "I want some Valentine's sexy action" like a recycled Christmas box. To Husband's defense, it is red, pink, purple, and orange-all Valentine's-y colors. The snowflake and reindeer details scream "it's cold outside...let's cuddle".

Next there's the ripped corner of the erotic gift box with remnants of an old sticky Christmas gift tag. HOT. RED HOT. That little ripped corner whispers "hey baby...I'm going to rip off those sweat pants and baggy T-shirt tonight". Yes, I'm getting all hot and bothered by you saucy gift-box.

Then, oh heaven help me, that gift tag...Hey you gift tag...you've got double the lovin'...literally. Didn't you know recycled gift-labels are gift-wrapping's aphrodisiac? Because husband does...bow chika bow wow...

The gift itseld?...sexy panties? Nah. Some milky chocolates? Nope. Creams and lotions? No way...
In this racy Valentine is not 1, but 2 DSLR camera remotes! This way I can take naughty pictures of glitter envelopes and hand-painted necklaces...soooo naughty.

For reals though folks...is this a sign that we should take it up a notch?
I like to think we are so sexy for the other 364 days of the year, that we use Valentine's Day as our day off...yeah, that's it.

When Clint Proposed

This is the story of how Clint asked me to marry him. It happened on Valentine's Day 2009 on Temple Square with a dozen red roses and a lovely Hispanic family. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Lets start at the beginning.

The weekend of Valentine's Day that year just so happened to be a weekend where my family was in town. They were spending the night at my grandma's and so I drove my college-going tushy from Provo to North Salt Lake. Clint came with because we were dating and it was Valentine's weekend after all.

Valentine's morning began with an awkward gift-giving session where nobody gave any gifts but Clint to me. He insisted everyone gather around in my grandmother's living room and watch as I opened up a little box. Mind you, if it was a wedding ring I was going to say "no" because proposing in your girlfriend's grandma's living room was probably the least romantic location ever.
Relax.
In the box was a string of pearls (which I later found out was a decoy gift so I wouldn't expect any other surprises).
Overall, the grandma's-house-gift-exchange was kinda uncomfortable.

And then I spent the rest of my Valentine's Day doing what any normal single girl does: I spent it wedding dress shopping with my mother. No. Seriously.
So let me explain...My mom lived 6 hours away from me, she wouldn't be back in town until May, Clint and I had talked a lot about marriage at about that time, and I needed her help tackling the most significant task of a wedding day...that dress!
Um k?

The guys were all busy doing "guy stuff", so it was a terribly romantic day all around.

Then at about 4:00 in the PM my mom's all, "Hey! The guys just called and they said we should meet them on Temple Square to hang out."
Subtle.

We trekked to Temple Square. Parked. My mom immediately disappeared. And then I wandered around like an idiot as I passed not 1, not 2, but 3 couples getting engaged!

But then, just ahead was Clint. And he had what looked like a bouquet of roses, so I figured I was supposed to be wandering towards him.

...just before I closed in on him, a short man stopped right in between us and mumbled something in a Hispanic accent like, "take our picture please?"
We were both amused by the interruption as Clint fumbled the flowers into my hands and took a picture of a Hispanic family of 8.
So that was awkward.

After, he got down on one knee, mumbling something like "will you put up with me forever?" and I was like "I guess I will" (all in good humor of course)

And that is the story of how Clint proposed to me on the most predictable day, at the most expected location, with the most common flower. And I still said yes ;).

I am happy to announce that Clint and I are just about 4 years happily married, and that I threw away those terrible boring black flats.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Valentine's day gifts for him

I may like Valentine's day the best...but who am I kidding, I say that about every holiday. And I am somewhat certain my love language is that of gift giving...so naturally I plan ahead when giving to my dear Valentine. All these little gifts have caught my eye and most come from small(er) businesses that I sure love to support!

Merry Mantel

On the first day of December I woke up to a to-do list longer than my Christmas tree is tall. And I put on my big girl panties and set out to tackle that list, so help me. From one frantic activity to another I paused only to complain about how much I had to do or to rebuke Husband for not joining me in my relentless pursuit of list completion...
and then husband said something that was pretty important. Something pretty wise. He said, "could you just relax and enjoy your day and not get so stressed when you don't get everything done?"
and I was like, duh Alix, this time of year is to enjoy each other, not cross each other off a list.
don't tell him, but Husband made me realize that I need to relax...Christmas will come no matter what I do or don't get done. That special day will come whether or not I enjoy the next few merry weeks.
So enjoy I will.
Celebrate I will.
Be grateful for Christ, His birth, His atonement, I will.
Sound like Yoda, I do.

I might not get everything done that I "need" (aka "want") to do, but I did get this Holiday mantel done. and that's something worth noting. So consider it noted.

Welcome December!

The best part of this Holiday mantel, obviously, is the glitter antlers. You guys, I have been asking my Husband to get me a set of antlers for a while now and then I just decided to make some myself.

The Materials
- mdf board >> you can find pre-cut 2'x2' boards at Home Depot!
- Teal Paint >> Glidden semi-gloss, color Floating Bubbles (who doesn't want that color in their life?)
- Gold glitter >> Hobby Lobby (or wherever)
- Elmer's liquid glue >> WalMart (or wherever)

The Design
I did antlers because antlers are usually on my mind (hence my blog title graphic), but I highly encourage experimenting with other Holiday designs (and with other colors of paint and glitter).
Some ideas I considered...
- a snowman: 3 mdf boards hung in a vertical row, each with a glittery circle in each
- a target on one board and an arrow on the other
- a Christmas tree

The Process
1| paint the board/s teal (or color of choice) >> let dry completely
2| in pencil, sketch design on board
3| in sections, paint glue within the design (aka: the desired glittery sections)
4| sprinkle glitter on the glue
note: it helps to glue and glitter in sections so that the glue doesn't dry before you add glitter
5| dump off excess glitter
6| mount on wall >> I used a sawtooth hanger mount (also from Home Depot), but you can use wire or just prop them up on a mantel

and an important part of this time of year is family traditions...don't forget to tell me your traditions here!!!

This shiz is funny

Okay you guys...I married the greatest human alive.
Women, stop looking for prince charming. Men, you too.
He is here. In my house. Wearing hiking boots (officially "hunting" boots because he already had a pair of "hiking" boots so he insisted it "absolutely necessary" to purchase these boots).
But here is the very best part...He came out wearing these boots and whitey tighties-that is all.

I LOVE HIM.
I laughed so hard when he came out that I teared up. So proud of him, truly.

In case my story of Husband didn't crack you up...check out this video. It was so funny it made me pee a little. In my pants. I'm definitely buying some lady pens ;) (you have to click on the link to get that last joke).

tomorrow = advent calendar with terracotta pots!!  (now you just peed in your pants from excitement)

Jazzy

I don't know about you, but when I hear, "Hey do you want go to a pre-season Jazz game and sit in literally the highest seats in the arena?" I am like, "Fetch Yes!"
So that is exactly what we did.
We bundled up, drove to the big city, and trekked a long rainy walk to Energy Solutions Arena.
Nugget was pissed most of the game, but I snatched a precious pic of him sleeping.

These last two pics are priceless. We couldn't get Liam to look away from this fountain for a second. You notice his intense focus in the final pic?
You may also notice that I did not take one single picture of the game. I guess I just enjoyed the company and the Seattle-like rain.

3 years of marriage...and counting.

Hello all! This week was a special week. I turned first year mother's day and husband and I turned 3 years marriage. Woo-who! To celebrate, Clint told me to "take a hike", literally. We went up the canyon, weather was perfect, dogs were happy, baby was fed, we ate Jimmy Johns (can I just point out that not once has Jimmy Johns got mine or husband's order correct. not once. and we order sandwiches as they come on the menu. I swear they make the same sandwich for everyone no matter what one you order. butts.).

I am still feeling heavy, but Nugget is only 9 weeks old, so I need to be patient. The weigh-in for this week is 144 lbs (5 pounds less than the last weigh-in). I really want to start P90X hard core, but can't seem to find the time (aka: lame excuse). I think I will need to start getting up at 7:00am to fit P90 in my life (be warned, this is a danger to society as I am not a pleasant morning exerciser...or pleasant morning human for that matter). ps...that warning was mostly for Clint who is graced by my attitude every morning. Anyways...our anniversary was lovely. Husband bought me a funny and inappropriate card (two of my favorite things) and I made him a card out of wasi tape and die-cuts (two of his favorite things [insert winking emoticon]). And to finish the evening we watched Modern Family, which I plan to rewatch 2 times today.

Bath Day!

Today I planned to get a lot done. Today my mom and sister went back home and I was sure with all their help over the weekend I would be able to get some work done on my book...take pictures for some future blog posts...make cookies...take the dogs on a walk...and make it to the HOA meeting. I thought at the very least I would be able to shower.

Nope...today I held and breastfed Nugget Liam all day...and if you thought I might get something done when Husband Clint got home, think again. After a quick dinner, Nugget and I sent Husband on his way to church meetings and basketball games.

So today I got "nothing" done. But then I realized, someday Nugget wont want to hug me all day...and while that thought made me sad, it also made me realize I did the most important thing today. Nothing but send time with baby Liam.

Nugget Liam hates 3 things:
1. Cold wipes on his bum
2. Not being held at all times
3. Sponge baths
...here are some funny photos of Husband giving Liam a bathy-poo...he freaked once we sponged water onto his little belly.

Liam's Baby Shower

About a month ago my family threw a baby shower weekend in anticipation for the little nugget's arrival...its hard to believe that Liam is here! Anywho...the shower was amazing and my good friend Lacee, with elle imagery, captured the perfection of it all!

Most of the decorations were handmade by my mom, sister, dad (what a stud), and I. The cupcake liners were from Orson and Gygi but you can find a ton of party stuff at my new favorite party store Shop Sweet Lulu.

Thanks to everyone who came and celebrated with us this amazing event in our life!

Liam's Birth Story

As parents, Clint and I felt a great deal of responsibility in carrying and delivering a new child into this world. This is why we (well mostly me) decided to birth naturally-it was our feeling that birth is a natural process and working with my body would be the best thing for our new little boy. Beginning the first week of January we participated in a HypnoBirthing course that taught us how to use breathing, deep relaxation, and imagery to surrender to contractions and trust that my body and our baby would conduct labor as they were designed to do. More than anything, HypnoBirthing helped me build confidence in my body and eliminated my fear of pain during labor. I'm sure this all sounds lovely on paper, but seriously, Liam's birth was a textbook HypnoBirth experience...we feel very blessed.

At 2:30 PM on March 9, 2012 my water broke. I was in the middle of watching Pride and Prejudice-trying to elevate my swollen feet-when I had the frequent urge to pee. I got up, went pee, sat down, and gush! Immediately I knew it was my water breaking, which is very rare for first time moms, but there was no doubt when the fluid that leaked through 3 layers of clothes and a blanket I made for Clint for Christmas. First, I called Clint, who didn't answer, and then I called my mom, who couldn’t believe I was going into labor already-my due date was the 19th. Next I called our midwife-Jen-who was thrilled. Then I called Clint again (didn't answer) and again (finally he stopped his meeting to answer).
"Um...my water just broke," I said.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"Yep...it soaked through my pants and your Christmas blanket. It was a substantial amount of fluid."
"Cool...okay well let me finish a few things up at work and I'll head home."
"Okay, love you bye."
We are pretty calm and collected right? :)

Next, like the good little HypnoBirthing student I was, I got into a giant bath and listened to two hypno scripts (Liam loves the sound of Marie Mongan's voice). Clint got home around 4:30 PM and I was just finishing up my last script. While bathing, contractions were mild and about 15 to 30 minutes apart. As first-time parents we were prepared to labor at home for several hours before going to the hospital. Like nesting birds nest, we calmly went about finishing up packing for the hospital. And then by 5:00 my contractions were 4 minutes apart. This was moving much faster than predicted.
(Note...one thing I was not expecting during labor: when you relax during a contraction you also loose all control of your bladder. Needless to say, I had to sprint to the toilet for each contraction).

With four maxi pads on (for the pee :)) and an empty car seat we were off to the hospital! We got there at 6:00 PM and when we arrived Clint asked if he should drop me off at the front.
"No I can walk." I am really tough ;).

Straight to the elevators-where I had a tremendous contraction and literally filled my Uggs with pee (another spectacular detail for you)-and up to labor and delivery. The nurses were skeptical of my quick progression but when I indicated I just wet my pants they gladly showed me to my delivery room. Waddling as fast as I could I barely got to the bed before the next contraction began. With HypnoBirthing, the idea is to achieve total relaxation during contractions so that each surge is more efficient and you have less pain because you are not fighting against your body. This totally works.

After changing I labored in the hospital bed for an hour. I was dilated to 6 centimeters and 100% effaced! Doni, my awesome nurse, was trying to get me checked in but she had to wait during surges...after doing this for an hour Clint answered the rest of her questions :). Contractions were becoming quite intense but I remained calm through each. This I owe greatly to Clint, who was seriously the world's best doula. He stood by my side through the whole labor reminding me to "relax your face, relax your eyes, and feel your baby coming to you." He really listened in those child-birth classes! Midwife Jen arrived around 7:00 PM. This is when I had the sudden urge to bathe. Off with the gown and into the tub I went. Clint's voice continued to be my anchor. He poured hot water over my belly during each contraction, which was an amazing painkiller, and the contractions progressed in frequency and intensity. They were so intense that I was moaning through each surge. If you can bring yourself to a place of trust and comfort with your body I would highly recommend deep moans through contractions. It was a miracle laboring technique. By 8:30 PM, Jen told me I was dilated to 8.5 centimeters! I felt we were close, but it also felt like I had only been in the hospital for 5 minutes.

Without much conversation I decided it was time to get out of the tub, leaning on Clint during several standing contractions, we finally made it. Laboring on my left side, surges began to come without rest in between. I could feel my body progressing quickly. At 9:00 PM I was dilated to 9.5 centimeters and switched to laboring on all fours. This did not help-I felt like I didn't have the support of the bed on my uterus during surges. Jen suggested I lay on my right side to help dilate to a 10. She also said if I get the urge to push, listen to my body and push. Within minutes I was a 10 and both Jen and Clint could feel little Liam's head. During this transitional part of labor I felt overwhelmed by the intensity of contractions. There was no break in between and I remember thinking to myself, I'm done. I didn't feel done in the sense that I wanted pain medications. I felt done with labor because I knew I was close-I literally felt like I was almost done. With one leg on Clint's shoulder (not typical-but effective :)) I began to push hard with contractions at 9:30 PM. Then I began to push in spurts between contractions. I was crowning! Midwife Jen helped Clint prepare to catch Liam (got him gloves...told him how to place his hands...you know, important details) and nurse Dori took over leg-holding duty. Moaning ("like a cow delivering a calf" as Clint puts it) I pushed Liam's cone head into the world. With great force, that freaked Clint out a bit, he pulled the rest of Liam's body out while Jen helped from my side. At 10:02 on March 9, 2012 Liam was born a healthy pink baby! He began to cry immediately like a good baby...which makes sense because he was a good pregnancy and a good labor and a good delivery...lets hope he keeps it up! Liam was 19" long and weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces.

When people say that you never really understand a charity type of love until you have a child, they are understating the truth. The kind of love you feel after delivering a child can't fit into any words. All I could think was, he is perfection. And he is. Natural childbirth has many advantages. For one, recovery has been quick and easy (the nurses got mad at me for getting up and going to the bathroom by myself after) (also, I didn’t tear, so I suppose that makes a huge difference). For two, you gain an amazing sense of confidence in and love for your body...you find an inner strength you never knew you had. But the best part of delivering naturally is feeling your baby coming to you every step of the way. The instinctual part of my being felt a deep connection to my baby, as if I knew when he was ready to come, ready for me to push, ready to be birthed. When I held him against my chest just seconds after he entered the world I said, "we did it". Liam, Clint, and I did it!

Men in Skirts with a Twist.

Mr. alix adams (aka Clinton William Adams) is pretty funny...usually the most so when he is not trying to be. Don’t get me wrong, Clint can crack jokes with the best of um', but one of his funniest habits is his movie selections. Clint's most frequently viewed films can be categorized into two sections:
1. men in skirts
2. romance with a twist

So here is the breakdown:

1. men in skirts
- Braveheart (kilts = plaid mini skirts )
- Dances with Wolves (leather skirts)
- Gladiator (armor skirts)
- Troy (leather armor mini skirts)
- and...How to Train Your Dragon (yes…the animated film...also kilts)

2. romance with a twist
- The Devil Wears Prada...and the twist is Meryl Streep who he describes as a metaphor for all terrible bosses
(not kidding, he LOVES this movie...he claims it is the working dynamics he enjoys about this film, not the high heals---I'm not convinced)
- Titanic...and the twist is that most everybody dies
(picture this: Saturday night I come downstairs to find Clint enthralled in the scene where [spoiler alert!] Jack freezes to death...so funny to find my husband and two dogs watching the Titanic sink [which sounds worse than it is]. Note: does anybody else think it is weird that the old lady dies and returns to Jack [who she knew for a week] and not her husband who fathered her children? WTF James Cameron?!)

Happy Tuesday everyone! If you have weird favorite movies leave a comment!

Hot date for V-Day

"a good marriage is based on a talent for friendship"
- Friedrich Nietzsche

This Valentines day husband and I decided it would be fun to stay in and team cook. In commemoration of lovey V-day I thought I would introduce you to my husband and Valentine!

Clint is husband and Clint is confident
hint: I am the pregnant bowling ball…he is the everything

for Valentines day Clint bought me a card and this is how he labeled it

Clint is now exploring cooking.
He was so proud of his cooking that (for the first time since I met him) he delayed consumption to take a picture of his dinner and post it on facebook… and send it in a text message to all his family.

This is the gourmet tenderloin steak husband made for our V-day dinner that was so fancy he used butcher's string, wine, and porcini mushrooms. It was SOOOO yummy!

Clint loves cheesecake. I also made a delicious dessert (and 3 sides) to go with our dinner. I made Oreo cheesecake found here.

Clint was the best Valentine in the world…he comes to birthing classes every week, works to keep the family afloat, and is going to be the best daddy ever!
